David, age 66, was born in Edmond, OK to Martin Jacob Canan and Vera Marie (Lowery). He served faithfully in the United States Air Force for 27 years retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1997, and then became a Rehabilitation Specialist for OK Department of Rehabilitation Services. He was very well-educated having achieved not one but two Masters Degrees. During Vietnam, he was an English Language Instructor to South Vietnamese helicopter pilots. After the war, he trained to become a Chapel Manager. His love of history led him to be extensively involved in genealogy; he has traced his family lineage back to the 1400s. David battled against a debilitating genetic disorder that left him with very limited mobility in his legs. Despite his painful condition, he continued to work and stay active with the Oklahoma Genealogical Society, volunteer at the VA, and remain a faithful member of the Del City Church of Christ. David is survived by his children with Sharon (Kennedy): daughter, Michelle; twin sons, Robert (Cyndy) and Steven (Laura); 3 grandchildren, Max, Ettalyn, & Caetlyn; brothers, Gary (Jeannette), John (Rachel), & Robert and many other family members. Visitation will be today, January 8, 2015 from noon to 8 pm. A service to celebrate his life will be 1 pm, Friday, January 9, 2015 at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the Paralyzed Veterans of America or any other organization that supports disabled/wounded veterans.
