James E. Sconzo, 91, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2022, with his family by his side at his residence.
Born in Centerville, Iowa, he was the son of Frank E Sconzo, Sr. and Mary Argin. He was the loving husband of Hilda E. (Bowers) Sconzo, with whom he celebrated 53 years of marriage.
Jim enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1948, He transferred to the U.S. Army in 1967 as a Chief Warrant Officer. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1975 after 27 years of service. Among numerous medals awarded Jim received 2 Bronze Stars while serving in Vietnam.
Jim and his family moved to McAlester, Oklahoma in 1975 where he was the Personnel Officer at the State Penitentiary. In 1977 the family transferred to Oklahoma City, with the Department of Corrections. He went on to work as Deputy Director for the ABEL Commission during the Liquor by the Drink era. In 1979, Jim began his 40-year career with the Community Action Agency of Oklahoma City & Oklahoma/Canadian Counties serving as the Executive Director until his retirement in December 2019. In 2018, the South OKC Chamber of Commerce named Jim, “Citizen of the Year” for his long service to the citizens of Oklahoma City.
James is survived by his wife, Hilda E. Sconzo, his daughter, Catherine D. Sconzo, his grand-daughter, Lauren B. Osborne and her fiancé, AJ Seadler.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Buchanan Funeral Service, 8712 N. Council Road, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73132. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church, 7336 W. Britton Road, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73132.
