Jean Ellen Rowland of Oklahoma City died on June 21, 2024, at the age of 93.
Born Jean Ellen Macdonald in Oklahoma City on October 21, 1930, to parents Alexander and Margaret Macdonald, she moved as a young child to Tulsa, where she spent most of her life. She attended Will Rogers High School in Tulsa and the University of Tulsa.
She married Vernon “Leroy” Rowland in 1952 at University Baptist Church in Tulsa.
Jean was an active member of Skelly Drive Baptist Church in Tulsa and Highland Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. She was also a member of the Christian Women’s Club in Tulsa and Oklahoma City.
She loved her family and was loved by them. Jean delighted in playing Skip-Bo with her grandchildren and was highly competitive, making the kids earn every victory. She also loved her pet cats and enjoyed swimming with her grandchildren – as long as she didn’t get her hair wet. In her youth, she was an avid tap dancer.
She was known to use only G-rated language, which made her pronunciation of “big ice tea spoon” at a family dinner a memorable moment in family lore.
Jean liked to travel and took many vacations over the years. One of her favorite trips was a cruise on the Mississippi River.
Jean spent her later years at Baptist Village in Oklahoma City, where she enjoyed doing puzzles with her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son-in-law, Ron Pinson; and daughter-in-law, Charlotte Rowland. She is survived by her son, Jim Rowland; her daughter, Martha Pinson; grandson, Jason Rowland; grandson, Travis Pinson, and his wife, Ann Pinson; granddaughter, Connie Rowland; granddaughter, Jennifer Pinson; and great-granddaughter, Cecelia Pinson.
The service for Jean will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at 12:00 PM at Buchanan Funeral Service, 8712 N Council Rd. Oklahoma City, OK 73132. Interment will follow directly after at Floral Haven Cemetery in Broken Arrow, OK.
