Leonard Edwin Onley, born August 30, 1941, to James Weldon and Amy Loudell “Parrish” Onley, was the third of six children. He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1960 and pursued barbering, first in Texarkana, Texas, and later in Dallas, where he met and married Carolyn Layne Bradford in February 1963. They had three children: Eddie (1963), Kim (1965), and Tammy (1967).
Leonard was passionate about bird hunting and owned many bird dogs, with Mookie being his favorite. He enjoyed teaching his grandsons the sport. Additionally, he was an avid golfer and fisherman, activities he shared with his children and grandchildren. Leonard owned a property in Mulhall, Oklahoma, affectionately known as Papaw’s Farm, where his family created many cherished memories.
Leonard was a devoted husband to Carolyn for over 60 years, setting an exemplary standard of love. He was also a dedicated father and the beloved Papaw to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, known for his warm presence at family events and his teaching trips to the lake to water-ski. Leonard frequently took his grandchildren to work, making each one feel uniquely special.
After being a barber, Leonard worked for Amalie Oil and Taylor Petroleum before retiring from Bostic Tires.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn, children Eddie Onley (Sandy), Kim Welch (Donnell), and Tammy Clemmens (Brian), nine grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Glen and Cliff Onley, and many nieces and nephews.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, Weldon and Loudell Onley; his brother Happel Onley; sisters Helen Cook and Louise Taylor; brother-in-law Paul Taylor; and sisters-in-law Charlotte and Phyllis Onley.
Leonard lived an extraordinary life, touched everyone’s heart along the way, and will be incredibly missed, but never forgotten.
The visitation for Leonard will be held from 1-8 PM, with family present from 4-6 PM, on Monday, August 19, 2024, at Buchanan Funeral Service, 8712 N Council Rd. Oklahoma City, OK 73132.
