Vera Mae (Hill) Emmons went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, August 25, 2023. She was born on April 1, 1930, to James and Hazel Hill, Norman, OK, the youngest of four children. She was affectionately named “Biddy” by her older brothers and family. Vera Mae attended Norman High School and received her BA in Physical Education from the University of Oklahoma, Class of 1952. Upon graduating, Vera taught Sports Education at Casady School, which included Women’s Field Hockey and Softball. Her love of sports was life-long, not only as a fan, but also as a participant and educator. She remained an ardent fan of Oklahoma University athletics and enthusiastically watched and analyzed each and every OU football game. Vera Mae went on to be a substitute teacher for Oklahoma City Public Schools and also worked as receptionist for Dr. Sidney Schnitz, Pediatrician.
Vera Mae married the love of her life, Wesley B. Emmons on August 10, 1952. They established a home in The Village, OKC, where they had two daughters, Dana and Lisa. In their early days, Wes and Vera were faithful members of Village Christian Church and leaders of the middle school student ministry. They developed lifelong friendships with several couples from their church and met in a weekly Bible study with them for over 40 years. In their later years, they joined New Covenant Christian Church. Wes and Vera were volunteers for Meals on Wheels, Whiz Kids and for the County Election Board. They enjoyed traveling in their RV and spent many summers at Lake Arbuckle with family and friends. Vera Mae was a loving mother and grandmother to four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She loved celebrating holidays, birthdays, playing games, and living life with them. We will keep her fun-loving spirit in our hearts forever.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 62 years, Wesley “Wes” Emmons as well as her three brothers Harold, Russell and Bob Hill. She is survived by two daughters, Dana (Carey) Cannon, of Colleyville, TX and Lisa (Tim) Wilkins of Edmond, OK; grandchildren: Laura (Steven) Mitchell of Chickasha, OK and Turner Wilkins of OKC, Mallory (Greg) Maberry of Justin, TX and Preston (Jennifer) Keith of Paris, France, and four great-grandchildren: Ava, Clay and Silas Mitchell and Elise Maberry. She leaves behind a number of cherished cousins and a special niece, Sharon Howell of Mineral Wells, TX.
A “Celebration of Life” for Vera Mae will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 16 at Buchanan Funeral Service, 8712 N. Council Road, Oklahoma City. Memorials may be made to New Covenant Christian Church, 12000 N. Rockwell, OKC.
