Melvin E. "Mel" Harris beloved husband, dad and Papa passed away May 23, 2010 after a long courageous battle with cancer at the age of 63. He was born in Buckhannon, West Virginia on November 9, 1946 to Mr. & Mrs. Paul E. Harris. After graduating Elkins High School he attended college in Morgantown, West Virginia and then worked briefly for the Bureau of Public Debt in Washington, DC. The desire to serve his country prompted him to enlist in the United States Air Force where he served 4 years and was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War. After his military service he began a 30 year career at the Dayton Tire Plant in Oklahoma City. His hobbies included his 56 Chevy "Black Magic", camping, fishing, reading, writing and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Rustyne; son, Russell and wife Jo Ann; daughter Stephanie Shelts and husband Mike; daughter Andrea Black and husband Dale; grandchildren (whom he adored) Landon, Samantha, Logan, Olivia, Blake and many friends. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday from 6-8 PM.
Services will be held Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 2pm at Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel in Oklahoma City followed by a burial with military honors at Yukon Cemetery in Yukon, Oklahoma.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made in his honor to The American Cancer Society or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
